National Pit Bull Awareness Day

This Saturday, October 27th, is National Pit Bull Awareness Day. Started in 2007 by Jodi Preis of Bless the Bullys (a pit bull rescue group in Tennessee), the goal of National Pit Bull Awareness Day is to educate the wider public about pit bulls and bring  more positive media attention to the breed. Interestingly enough, just calling something National Pit Bull Awareness Day was controversial as some in the dog community thought the name would involve too many negative connotations (which is kind of the whole point – to address negative stereotypes).

As a pretty large doggie day care and lodging facility, we’ve seen hundreds and hundreds of pit bulls and pit mixes. These dogs, like many breeds, run from the sweetest thing ever, to dogs that have behavioral issues that make them less than ideal matches for every potential pet parent. All of this has just served to reinforce our position that we don’t discriminate based on breed – we make decisions based on individual dogs.

What’s your take?
