How to Protect Your Dog from Foxtails in the Bay Area

As summer approaches in the Bay Area, dog owners face a hidden hazard: foxtails. These barbed grass seeds can embed themselves in your dog’s skin, ears, nose, or paws, leading to painful infections and costly veterinary visits. Fortunately, with some preventive measures, you can keep your furry friend safe.

What Are Foxtails?

Foxtails are seed heads from certain grasses that have barbed structures designed to attach to animals for seed dispersal. In dogs, these barbs can penetrate the skin and migrate internally, causing serious health issues. They are prevalent in the Bay Area, especially during the dry months from late spring through fall.

Preventive Measures during Foxtail Season

  • Avoid High-Risk Areas: Stick to well-maintained paths and avoid letting your dog roam off-leash in areas where foxtails are common.
  • Post-Walk Inspections: After each walk, thoroughly check your dog’s fur, between the toes, inside the ears, and around the mouth and eyes.
  • Use Protective Gear: Consider using dog booties to protect paws and specialized hoods to shield the head and ears, especially if you frequent areas known for foxtails.
